Since all of you guys know cancer came as a shock to my family and I, I wasn’t prepared for the amount of money we had to waste cancelling trips and not getting a refund back. I was slated to travel to China for a conference with my mom with everything booked early July, and to Koh Samui with my friends and Ben towards the end of July. Both trips were cancelled because I was in the hospital.
Looking at the bigger picture, those trips were secondary with what I had to face during that month, so Ben and I planned for Japan right after Datuk yunus said I could travel. The days leading up to it was filled with excitement of course, but I have to admit that I didn’t really like Tokyo because shopping is really expensive AND it was really packed! This is just based on my perspective because we had to take the subway/train everywhere as taking the cab is crazy expensive!!!! Plus, commuting around when you don’t read Japanese is really difficult, so be prepared for that!
As I wasn’t a huge fan of Tokyo, I thought I narrow my 5 days of time in Tokyo to my 6 favourite picks of what to do there..
1. Roppongi Hill
Roppongi Hill is a nice place to getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city because it’s quieter and more upmarket! So, you can find all your branded stuff here BUT be warn, it’s actually more expensive than Malaysia! Loving the lights dotting the branded street.
A must TRY when you are at Roppongi Hill is the restaurant called Mamehin which serves AWESOME ramen.. we chanced upon it and clearly didn’t regret our decision
The taste of the broth was delicious and the ramen was very tangy which shows how fresh it is!
2. Mori Tower Observatory
I would say this is a MUST when you are at Roppongi hills because the view from here is breathtaking…. Plus, it’s very quiet compared to Tokyo Tower. It has quiet spaces with tables and chairs for you to chill..very romantic
View from Mori Tower
3. Harajuku
Yup, met Cheesie, Junya and Ling Ling at Harajuku for some yummy katsu
For me, Harajuku was a good place to do shopping because it has a variety of shops from clothes to knick knacks. Thus, you can find both cheap and expensive things there tooo… don’t forget the back alleys..there are shops there as well.
4. Shibuya Crossing
This is a MUST as a tourist just to observe the amount of people crossing the street at one go.I swear they look like ants from the top and how can you not come here after watching the Fast and the Furious right?
To get a better view of the crossing, you can head to either Starbucks or Loccitane Cafe to enjoy the view
We chose Loccitane cafe for it’s dessert, and comfort
Their famous creme brulee which was not too sweet
They had a variety of tea to choose from with fresh honey
5. Standing Sushi Bar
I tried the standing sushi bar near the area I lived in, basically this sushi bar was next to the Tamachi Station, east exit
Nondescript entrance, so better watch out for it
I would say it’s an experience to stand and eat, because it’s efficient and the sushi is just soooo fresh!
Our assortment of sushi which costs us 1000 yen, 30 USD. Most sushi bars in Tokyo get their supply of sashimi from Tsukiji Fish market. Many locals don’t know or have never been to Tsukiji market, so I wouldn’t say it’s a must do if you want to live like the locals because you can get the sashimi from sushi bars anyway
6. Odaiba
This is my favourite place in Tokyo because you have to travel a little further to get too and there’s hardly anyone here to bump into you when you walk.
I love the view from here because you are facing the rainbow bridge directly
We basically bought all our souvenirs here because they have very cool things like lucky boxes, AND all Tokyo sweets are here in one place with many shops to choose from
There’s even a Takoyaki museum
It’s not your typical “museum”, it’s basically many different takoyaki stalls for you to order your food from. You would never guess how many types of Takoyaki there is
If you want to play some games, or sit a roller coaster, head to Joypolis within Odaiba, it’s pretty fun in there!
The view from Odaiba when the sunsets.. how can you not like this?
We were there on NYE, so I am guessing all these lightings were put up specifically for it but it just made me happier to be there
I have to stress that Odaiba is my favourite place because you have everything under one roof from shopping, an amazing view, all the way to a museum!
Many have asked me to blog about my travels in Japan and these places or experiences is my personal recommendation of things to do when you are in Tokyo. My next post about Kyoto is even more exciting because I LOVE LOVE it there… from the sights to the taste! The pictures taken are all really good because Kyoto is just that picturesque
Btw, all my pictures were taken with an Olympus EPL7 without flash.. it’s amazing how this camera absorbs light to bring out the best pictures…:)
Feel free to ask anything and I will try to answer them if I can about Tokyo
Love,
Mei Sze
Look great!
Thank you Roger. 🙂
