GE14 : A New Malaysia

On 1oth of May, many of us woke up with a smile and excitement in our hearts! It’s a brand new Malaysia after GE14 and it is monumental because we have changed the government together as one!

It was on the 9th of May that everyone came out regardless of race or age to vote. Honestly, this is my first time voting, and I went in bright eye, and bushy tail even when naysayers tried to discourage me. Many people who have voted before thought it would be impossible but we did it as a nation.

I saw the power of social media helping to turned the tides this time around. Prior to the elections, everyone was sharing news of what’s happening through social media which helped raise awareness. Furthermore, it was through social media that we had so many PACA’s and polling agents. On the night itself, if there was any wrongdoing, it was immediately uploaded. That was the strength of social media.

However, we should also be careful of sharing fake news, or inciting tension through it as well. I also see that people are just sharing everything, and everything they have to everyone without verification.

It’s best we wait for what’s to unfold and allow Tun M, the newly minted cabinet and his council of advisers do their jobs. I however do not agree with politicians who use social media to air their dirty laundry in the new government. I think it’s best to keep everything within the coalition and settle it to keep the positive sentiments. Most importantly, we want to rid corruption, and a government that cares about the people.

Anyway,  I am so proud of those who did their parts in making the 10th of May 2018 such a historical moment in Malaysia where democracy came through.

Not forgetting brands that supported voting by giving out freebies, in exchange for an inked finger! Good on you guys!

We, as the rakyat is definitely watching the new government, but with hope. I love Malaysia as my country and will do my utmost best to contribute, so I do hope for those who have yet to register, please do so for the next general elections 🙂

Love,

Mei Sze
