A few things before reading this, if you are afraid of blood, please don’t look at the second picture closely, and if you are not the type of person who cares about your health and wellbeing, don’t bother reading the post.
Recently, I manage to make time to get my genes tested after much nagging from my dad because a surgeon told me to do it once I have done my surgery, it allows me to know which cancers I am more prone too.
My mom on the other hand was apprehensive as she was afraid I would freak out upon knowing the results but what Dr.Rajban(consulting doctor for The Laureate) said that struck me is this..
“You are born with the genes, and genes don’t lie, it’s what you do upon knowing that may just save your life and prolong it even”
The best part about the test is that to get your DNA sample, they just need to conduct a buccal swab which is to get some sample of your inner cheeks
A 1 minute procedure and no fasting is required
The Laureate which collaborates with FitGenes in Australia basically gets it done at a very nice wellness center within Beacon hospital. There are 54 genes tested which covers these groups:
1. Inflammation
2. Cell Defence
3. Cardiovascular health – Related to stroke, high cholestrol
4. Fat metabolism & Cholesterol regulation – Related to diabetic genes
5. Vitamin D Metabolism
After one month of waiting for the results as your DNA will be sent to Australia for the profiling and report, it’s time to know what my genes tell me….
Pressure test is taken beforehand
Followed by a free radical test which I clearly failed. Mine is 330 and the maximum level is 310 š Could be the food I am eating, or mainly stress!
To get the results, Doctor Rajban will be there to explain with a nutritionist
The full report which looks like a book!!!!
I found out so many things from this report about my genes, and myself that astounded me. For example, my body lack anti-inflammatory genes which explains why I get keloids from wounds such as the sutures from the surgery. My genes basically tell me that I don’t get inflamed easily, but once it starts I don’t have the genes to stop it. In layman terms, once a fire is started in my body, it will spread and can related to the simplest things such as a harmless polyp in my colon which then grows into a tumour!
Part of the report which I photographed for you to read
The good thing is I my body naturally produces antioxidants which means I don’t even need to take supplements and Doctor did ask me to stop to allow my genes to produce it’s own natural antioxidants
There are so many other things I learned such as my body cannot metabolize coffee, I have a high metabolic rate gene which counteracts with the fact that my body has a tendency to put on weight, and I even found out that my body can’t release toxins on it’s own because I don’t have the genes for that.
So, upon finding out what genes you have, and don’t have… the report will then give you a report on what type of lifestyle and food you should be eating such as the below picture
The fact that I inherited the genes for depression predisposes me to a higher chance of getting it, hence the fact I can’t regulate stress very well. To decrease free radicals in my body, I really need to de-stress and I guess what I have been thinking and writing all this while is TRUE, I need to de-stress badly! I need to avoid tobacco exposure and smoke in general because I have a higher risk of getting lung cancer š
They even go into the fact that I need to sweat at least 15-20 mins a day to flush out toxins hence the daily sauna if possible
These are just the few pages I snapped for your better understanding but you can probably get the gist of what I’ve learned. Since I got my results, I started taking supplements that will benefit me and compensate for genes I lack, and even stopped taking antioxidants!
After that, the nutritionist will go into detail with you Ā on your daily food intake:)
The good thing is now I am not simply taking what everyone is asking me to take. Once again, I am not even lying, I swear that there are more than 101 things that people have asked me to try once they found out I have cancer, I know they mean well, but at one point, I was just taking so many things, I didn’t even know which one was good for me!!!!
Now, I know clearly what my body needs and what it doesn’t to bring out the best in me and to prevent future relapse.
I truly believe in this testing, it might be pricey but it’s only a small price to pay for your health and wellbeing. You only need to do this ONCE because your genes don’t change right?

Cheaper than US.. I was quoted an estimated 2-3k USD and not covered by insurance here unless one has immediate family who has a certain disease. Did they have specific genes that they tested? There are so many genes so I am assuming they only test part of it. Did you get to choose? Did you test for BRCA 1&2? I was advised to take genetic testing for cancer some 5 years back but still haven’t done so because of the expense and also, like you, I don’t know if I want to know more. I am afraid.
I didn’t know Malaysia has them. How long does the process take? Could I do it in a short trip home? Thanks for writing these. I haven’t heard from people who personally took it so your info is enlightening. I might consider it now.
Hi JingHan!!
